One band's misfortune is another band's oppurtunity as The Minni-Thins were invited to take the opening slot at X-Ray Magazine's annual Halloween bash at the Mockbee tonight (Saturday, October 30).

Expect to see freaks, perverts, demonic politicians, and depravity unbound.

DEAD FOR DEMOCRACY: A 2-day pre-election Halloween Party and get-out-the-vote drive
The Cincinnati Indie Media Network and the League of Pissed Off Voters present DEAD FOR DEMOCRACY on Oct. 29 and 30 from 8pm to 2am.
D4D is a politically-charged Halloween Ball featuring live rock, hip hop and dance music, art with political and spooky themes and Halloween party games updated for adults.

Visitors will get to bob for George Washington’s poisoned apples, join in a pre-election scavenger hunt and will be frightened by our team of presidential ghouls. Voter educational information will be on hand and everyone will be encouraged to get to the polls on Nov. 2.

“Think of it as Night of the Living Dead meets Election night,” event organizer Steve Novotni said. “Which aren’t really that different considering the two we’ve got to choose from.”

Admission is $5 or $2.50 for folks coming as a living or undead political hero or villain. Proceeds benefit the League of Pissed Off Voters and Media Bridges.

A Film Festival of Horror will coincide on the third floor of the gallery. There is a separate fee of $5 for the film fest, and you can enter through 603 West McMicken. The film fest begins at 6pm and lasts until 2am, and you can check it out Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Log onto http://festivalofhorror.com for the complete schedule and information on the films.

BRINK 2005

Friday November 12 at 9pm, the Historic Southgate House will host

the 4th annual
BRINK 2005 : A New Music Showcase by the CEAs
presented by Budweiser

This demonstration of forward momentum will feature twelve of our area's newest buzz bands, including performances by five CEA 2004 New Artist of the Year Nominees.

BRINK has had uncanny success in launching performers now thriving in Cincinnati's music scene, making this unique event a seasonal mecca for local music explorers and musicians alike.

The Cathedrals arrived to play last year's BRINK with only two previous performances under their belts. They will be headlining the Ballroom Stage as BRINK alumni and CEA 2004 New Artist of the Year Nominees.

A five dollar donation to the Lonely Instruments for Needy Kids organization brings access to all three floors of this legendary venue and these soon to be legendary performers. CityBeat is providing door prizes in celebration of our 10 Year Anniversary.

L.I.N.K.s will be accepting donated instruments as admission. Even if your instrument is not in perfect condition, please bring it in during BRINK! Help bring the joy of playing a musical instrument to a needy young student and receive a tax deduction for your gift on-site.

Top Five Desert Island Disks

Recently, Damon posed the question to the rest of the Minnis, "If you were going to be stuck on a deserted island, what five CDs could you not live without?" Here's my list, in no particular order.

- Pavement - Slanted And Enchanted, Luxe and Redux - This two-disk set represents some of my favorite music ever made and has rarely left my disk changer in the last year or so since it came out.

- Nirvana - In Utero - Besides the fact that I have claimed this album as my favorite of all time, I'll probably be pissed off about having to spend the rest of my life eating coconuts, and this work of noise will be most soothing.

- The Pixies - Surfer Rosa - 'nuff said.

- The Shins - Oh, Inverted World - It's a hard choice between this and "Chutes," but after much deliberation I've decided that this is my favorite. And while I'm on the subject: Natalie Portman, will you marry me?

- The Apples In Stereo - The Discovery Of A World Inside The Moon - Not that Pavement and Nirvana aren't fun, but if you were going to be stuck on an island for fifty years, you'd need something REALLY fun, and this album is (well, mostly).

The Newbees CD Release Party

This Saturday, October 23rd, our good friends, The Newbees, are releasing their first album: "Songs From A Dilapidated Apartment," at Radiodown in Covington. It's going to be a freakin' rock show and a half; including For Algernon, Tristen Shields, The Minni-Thins, and, of course, The Newbees.

The Minni-Thins - In Black Cause I Asked

Our first full length album will be called "In Black Cause I Asked" and will be released in June of 2005.

Last Tuesday, Jeff gave me copy of the disk thus far, which has all twelve songs, EQed and mixed, but minus backup vocals and instrumentation from Jason and the new guy, Darin. It clocks in at 35:33 and is an intense, fast, loud assault on your ear drums.
