Since Jeff and Tim were off witnessing the grandeur of Styx/ REO Speedwagon in Dayton, Jason played a quiet, semi-acoustic For Algernon set at Neon's tonight with trumpet player Eric Tepe(?). Jason and Eric turned in an amazing version of "Haven't You Learned" and "Johnny's New Religion" among others. The best part about it, though, was the bartender turned "Alien: Ressurection" on to all of the bar televisions at the beginning of the set. With Mr. Wells at his Wurlitzer seat, singing "Hope and Water," the alien-ravaged crew swam up (from where I didn't catch) to a nest of aliens and were attacked. Sigourney Weaver got a faceful of alien menace and some dreadlocked dude blew some shit up. Jason sang about how "all these drugs never make you disapear."
If you know Jason at all, you know he loves Winona Ryder. Unbeknownst to said jerkface, he was playing "Hit The Ground First" just as a rogue space passenger was taking Winona hostage. As Wells sang "You will never let me fall unless you hit the ground first," some poor schmoe (probably smitten by Winona), an alien baby bursting in bloody glory from his chest, lunged foward and rescued her!
The point, my friends, is that we should all urge Jason to score some sci-fi action flick, cause really, his songs are meant for it.
Somehow I forgot to post this earlier, but this Thursday you can catch Darin and myself at Rudyard Kipling's in Louisville, KY. We'll be doing a stripped down set with acoustic guitar, lap steel, and vocals, and you're likely to hear some new songs as well as your old favorites. This will be one of many upcoming regional shows, and probably one of many stripped down sets as well. The show is being hosted by Louisville's Debauchery Records (a kindred spirit to our very own VNRC), and will also feature the music of Adventure and IamIs. All the pertinent details can be found by following this link to Debauchery Records.
In other news, we'll be featured as the April "Artist Of The Month" on a local music shop's website. Thanks to Mike and TJ and to our good buddies over at The Frankl Project, who I'm sure had something to do with it. Check it out right here.
And finally... do you want to be our friend? We're on Myspace at http://www.myspace.com/minnithins
Thanks to Lainie for all of her kind words on her blog. Check out Lainie and Nessa's musings right here.
Beers are on us when we pass through your town!
The Minni-Thins CDs are available at most of your favorite Cincy music stores including:
- Barnes and Noble Newport, Kenwood, and Westchester
- Shake It Records
- Everybody's Records
- Phil's in Latonia
- Second Wind CD in Newport
You can pick up our EP, Live From York St album, and The Dreamers' Club OST at those places or you can just shoot us an email at minni_thins@yahoo.com
Pick up a copy of this week's Citybeat and you'll find us on the "To Do List" for this weekend. Mike Breen says, "The Thins' release is a great sampling of the group's spastic, sugar-buzz New Wave/Post Punk Pop. If you can keep up, The Thins' slanted, playful approach is infectuous, refreshingly unique, and completely engrossing." Thanks, Mike!
Remember, this is not a "new" EP, but a re-release of our self-titled disk (which has served as our demo for the last year) with The Vibrating Needle Recording Collective. The new CD will be "The Dreamers' Club OST," which will also bear the VNRC logo.
Because this is a dual CD release party (Coltrane Motion is also releasing an EP, called "No Well Ok Maybe Just A Little"), there will be incentive for buying both new disks. If you fork out the ten bucks for the pair, you'll recieve a copy of the Datawaslost 2004 comp, "Beep Click Strum Sing" as well as a collection of Minni-Thin demos (recorded in Darin's apartment) we're calling, "Fucked Up... Again (My Whole World Went Black)." There will be a hundred of both freebies on hand, so get there early.
